When you consider designing or refurbishing your learning environment remember each space is unique; Learning Studios, Makerspace, Cafeterias, Learning Commons, Staff Rooms, Resource Areas and each space fulfills a purpose and makes a statement about your school.
Every area tells a story, impressions are created when entering a school so consider the entry ways, offices and hallways, do they feel inspirational, and does the space promote the culture of your school? Students, parents, and community members determine their beliefs about your school based on the perceived environment.
The most important aspect of designing educational spaces is to fulfill the needs of the activity that is taking place within that space, both present and future.
When you look at a space it should be considered with a clear vision and a desired outcome. Take time to study every activity that will take place there and think, what do you want to achieve from the area?
Brainstorm with a colleague or as a group, if it is a learning area give your students a sense of ‘ownership’ by including them in your discussions.
Today we need to build student-centric education systems that allow our students to truly chart their own course through and beyond their educational pathway, supported by the culture of learning.
